Working in Ad Operations

A short Q&A on working in Ad Operations from a friend in the field.

What is the main purpose of your role?

The main purpose of my role is to ensure all campaigns are delivered on our website and Facebook apps in full and to manage the relationship with a number of video and display networks.

What do you do in a typical day?

Set up new campaigns, optimise existing campaigns, detailed reporting, negotiate rates, integrating new providers.

What skills and/or qualifications do you need to do your job?

Strong attention to detail and good communication skills.

How did you get into digital media/marketing?

I first started out in search, I knew a bit about how search worked as I had my own personal website that I would run PPC campaigns through Google AdWords. This gave me something to talk about when I went for interviews and made up for my lack of experience.

What are the career prospects?

Very good. So many options in our industry, whether it be video, search, social media or display. There is a lot going on!

What advice would you give to someone looking to follow your path?

Do as much much research as you can into your chosen area, if you haven’t got any experience it’s important that you have knowledge so you can give an opinion and have plenty to talk about when you go for interviews.
