Feeling sharp and looking sharper I strode confidently into the spacious atrium of the glass-walled building that is home to MoneySupermarket. Rather less confidently I got out of the lift on the wrong floor which meant I had to go back down to be let up again by the patient receptionist.
Having hit the right floor this time my first impression was one of luxuriant sofas, meeting pods, personalised water glasses, a beer fridge and an X-Box! I knew this would be the perfect place to spend a day.
I was here to find out why MoneySupermarket is fast gaining a reputation for being one of the most forward-thinking and innovative brand-side companies in the digital market, as well as being a great place to work. I also wanted an answer to a very common question: ‘day-to-day, what do you actually do?’
The only way I was going to find this out was to sample the delights on the shelves of this MoneySupermarket, from branding to SEO, so pen at the ready, I dived in.
Talent Acquisition with Jess
Jess picked me up from my perch on a large green sofa and immediately set the tone for the day. Friendly, funny and passionate, Jess is in charge of talent acquisition and seems to be acquiring quite a talented team.
RTB with Sammy
I was then handed over to Sammy, who was to tell me about her role as a Performance Media Manager in RTB (real time bidding). Sammy introduced me to the idea of cookie dropping visitors to MoneySupermarket’s website and then retargetting them on other websites.
PPC with Matt
I rolled down the desk two places (I was on a wheely stool) to meet Matt who was working on PPC as well as lining up a playlist for the speakers in the middle of the table. Three notable tracks were: My Heart Will Go On, Don’t Cry for Me Argentina and Candle in the Wind. Back-to-back…
Branding with Ercan
Over to the opposite side of the table I rolled to speak to Ercan, who is a Performance Media Manager involved in brand performance. As well as doing elements of what Sammy and Matt oversee, Ercan is tasked with driving brand recognition, for example through paid social on Facebook.
Tech with Dan
It was now Dan’s turn to heap wisdom upon me but first I had to wait for him to return from yoga! Another of MoneySupermarket’s perks was this relaxing lunchtime exercise; Dan assures me he has mastered the downwards dog.
Travel with Chris
Just before Dan could talk my ear clean off I nipped over to see Chris who works as a Performance Media Manager for TravelSupermarket. Chris is working on building and improving the travel branch of the company by attracting more partners, setting up exclusive deals and improving their search positions.
SEO with Jack
Everyone so far had sat in the same team so it was an exciting journey down one floor to meet my next sensei, Jack. Jack is another Performance Media Manager the big difference this time being that he works in SEO.
As the day came to an end my pen was replaced with a beer and my notebook snapped shut.
But what have I learned? Aside from improving my knowledge of PPC, RTB and SEO, I would say MoneySupermarket has taught me three things. Firstly the importance of integration in an office. Things like mixed skillsets within teams and rotating where teams sit means communication is much better. Chris highlighted the fact that you can approach people outside of your speciality which encourages innovation.
Secondly, the benefits of being a brand with all the front-end technology onsite (this is the tech normally provided by an agency). MoneySupermarket is spearheading this emerging trend of being a hybrid between brand and agency. It is clear to see how this allows the company to view different media channels as a whole and unearths further opportunities for innovation.
And finally, the joy of the cause. Jess mentioned at the start of the day that MoneySupermarket measures their success in terms of how much money they save their clients and Jack hammered this home at the end of the day.
For the nosier among you who fancy a closer look at the office and working environment I’ve included this delightful little gallery. Pretty impressive!
Thanks to everyone from MoneySupermarket for letting me bother them for a day and a pre-emptive thank you for saving me some money in the future!
